Girraween National Park
While Granite Gardens is a haven of peace and garden beauty, adventure lies just beyond the gate. The Granite Belt is blessed with an incredible range of national parks, each offering its own unique landscapes — from towering granite outcrops to cool creeks, lush forests, and breathtaking lookouts.
Whether you’re an experienced hiker, a nature lover with a camera, or simply someone who enjoys a scenic drive, you’ll find unforgettable places to explore — all within easy reach of Granite Gardens Cottages & Lake Retreat.
Girraween National Park — where the earth meets the sky
Just 30 minutes from Granite Gardens, Girraween National Park (meaning “place of flowers”) is a must-visit for anyone exploring the region. Famous for its massive granite boulders, balancing rocks, and wide-open landscapes, Girraween offers trails for all levels — from gentle walks along Bald Rock Creek to climbs that reward you with panoramic views over the Southern Downs.
Come in spring to see the park carpeted in wildflowers, or visit year-round to spot kangaroos, wallabies, and native birds. Don’t forget your camera — every corner offers a postcard-perfect view.
Sundown National Park — rugged, remote, and unforgettable
About one hour from Granite Gardens, Sundown National Park is a world apart. This is true wilderness country — think dramatic ridges, steep-sided gorges, and crystal-clear rivers running through untouched bushland.
Sundown is best suited to those seeking adventure. Some areas can only be accessed by high-clearance 4WD, so it’s important to plan ahead and travel prepared. You’ll find detailed guides and park information in your accommodation at Granite Gardens — please take a moment to read them before setting out.
For keen photographers and hikers, Sundown offers spectacular rewards — especially at sunrise and sunset, when the granite cliffs glow with colour.
Boonoo Boonoo National Park — waterfalls and wonder
Pronounced “bunna bu-noo”, Boonoo Boonoo National Park is well worth the day trip from Granite Gardens. The park’s highlight is the Boonoo Boonoo Falls, where the river tumbles over granite cliffs and plunges 210 metres into a vast gorge below.
There are easy walking tracks to viewing platforms, tranquil picnic areas, and refreshing swimming holes for warmer months. The combination of dramatic scenery and peaceful bushland makes Boonoo Boonoo a favourite among guests who want to connect with nature at their own pace.
